Amazing EV race. China led the pack in electric car sales in 2022, securing 60% of the global pot. China was followed by Europe and the United States. All 3 regions are expected to see electric car sales climb in 2023, though their global share rankings will likely stay the same. In line with this shift, current projections indicate that global electric car sales will jump 35% this year and grab an 18% share of total car sales worldwide, up from less than 5% in 2020. Going down. Funding to India-based startups fell 26% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) to hit $2B in Q1’23. This marked its lowest quarterly funding level since 2020 and a 75% drop in funding year-over-year. Other major regions in Asia suffered similar QoQ declines, with China and Israel seeing a 28% and 27% drop, respectively. Black Friday already? Walmart recently sold men’s fashion brand Bonobos for $75M, a 76% markdown from the $310M it paid for the D2C company in 2017. This drop reflects the broader valuation pain being felt across the public and private markets. In fact, two of Bonobos’ public D2C fashion peers, Warby Parker and Allbirds, have watched their market caps fall dramatically since their IPOs. Shades of $100K. A 6-figure salary goes the furthest in Memphis, Tennessee. After accounting for taxes, someone earning $100K is left with $86K in buying power relative to the average cost of living in the US. El Paso, Texas and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma round out the top 3. Notably, Texas accounts for 7 of the top 10 cities where $100K goes the furthest. In New York City, on the other hand, a $100K earner gains the equivalent of just $36K in buying power.
